Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet Middle School is housed in the historic Pearl High School. With an enrollment of more than 250 seventh- and eighth-grade students, these middle schoolers share the hallways and some classroom space with Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School.

The school was Nashville's first secondary magnet school and opened its doors in August 1986 withmural only seventh- through ninth-graders. It is in Nashville’s growing inner city and is bordered by the renowned Meharry Medical College and Fisk University. MLK was designed to attract a voluntary cross-section of academically talented students from diverse groups across Nashville and Davidson County.

Students at MLK Middle learn in ways that prepare them to be high school academic scholars. Middle school students can select from five world languages - Latin, German, French, Spanish, or Chinese - and physical science is available for high school credit. MLK students can participate in the School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt, a joint venture between Metro Schools and Vanderbilt University. Each student has an opportunity to participate in competitive junior varsity sports teams and interdisciplinary clubs.

At MLK, Every Student is Known individually for who they are and how they learn and thrive as a student. Administration focuses on ensuring that each student’s literacy, numeracy, social-emotional learning, and attendance are on track toward that one goal: to be a Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School graduate.

Did you know:

  • MLK’s seventh- and eighth-graders were 100% proficient on MAP testing.
According to U.S. News & World Report,
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet Middle is ranked #6 among Tennessee middle schools.
  • MLK middle school students have a built-in pathway to the high school.
