Dr. Tara Loba, a longtime MNPS educator and administrator, has been named the 2023 Tennessee National Distinguished Principal of the Year by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
Members of the Tennessee Principals Association and MNPS administrators surprised Loba this week with a visit to her school, Andrew Jackson Elementary in Old Hickory, to share the honor. Her son was on hand, too.
Loba, the executive principal of Andrew Jackson, was at a loss for words when she got the news.
“I’m surprised and shocked, but I’m very honored to represent elementary principals around the state,” she said.
The National Distinguished Principal Program honors outstanding elementary and middle school principals who ensure that America’s children acquire a sound foundation for lifelong learning and achievement. In addition, the distinguished principal must meet four criteria, which include demonstrating evidence of outstanding contributions to the community and to the education profession.
Dr. Brian Partin, executive director of the Tennessee Principals Association, in which Loba has been a leader for years, presented her with a gift as he bestowed the honor to the newly distinguished principal. 
“I’m super excited to be able to present this award to her. It is very well deserved,” Partin said. “Tara has served as an officer of the state, and she has led in many capacities within the state association, serving principals across the state of Tennessee.”
Loba has been in education for 30 years, teaching and serving in administrative roles for more than 20 years before becoming an executive principal more than eight years ago.
Dr. David Kovach, an MNPS executive director of schools who works closely with Loba, was at Andrew Jackson to honor her on Wednesday and had this to say about the longtime educator he is privileged to supervise: “I’m both excited for and proud of Dr. Loba in being recognized with this award. Most importantly, the Andrew Jackson students and families benefit from her quality leadership.”
Loba, who was selected from a field of outstanding principals, will be recognized by NAESP in Washington, D.C., in October.
