Titans players with students and educators

This week was a great week for reading as MNPS Promising Scholars students at Thomas Edison Elementary School welcomed eight Tennessee Titans players with a cheerful tunnel reception before the players read to the students.

My Brother's Keeper and the Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation joined the players for their annual Rookies Read Across Nashville event, designed to make sure students do not lose ground with reading during the summer. Dr. Broderick Thomas and William Mason from My Brother’s Keeper opened with a call-and-repeat affirmation circle encouraging students to speak positive words to themselves each day. Dean Hoskins, vice president of The Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation, spoke to students about the importance of reading daily.

The rookie players read the book “Cannonball” by Sacha Cotter. Afterwards, students were able to engage in a fun question-and-answer session with the players, revealing which players prefer chocolate milk over apple juice, who they would invite to a book club and which NFL players they would write about if they wrote a book.

The students received books and giveaways from the rookies and left excited about reading.
