Located in the thriving, diverse community of Southeast Nashville, Antioch Middle School serves more than 670 students in grades 6-8. The school values the rich and diverse cultural heritage it represents. Antioch Middle athletes posing in gym

Antioch Middle’s mission every day is to bring to fruition its motto: “Community, Care and Challenge: Yes, we are AMS Bears!”

An important way AMS fosters community is through its House system. Every student and every staff member belongs to one of four bear-themed Houses: Glacier House, Grizzly House, Panda House or Polar House. Houses encourage pride, responsibility and respect for the contributions of others and positively impact the school culture through friendly competition.

Care is fundamental at Antioch Middle because the staff recognizes that growth involves the whole person. It’s a Restorative Practices school that seeks to integrate language of understanding into interactions and provide opportunities to do the hard work of repairing harm when it occurs.

The school also provides ongoing support groups and clubs, including:

  • Girls Inc. - YWCA (6th grade girls): This group inspires all girls to be strong, smart and bold.
  • AMEND - YWCA (6th grade boys): Focuses on violence prevention and supporting social and emotional learning through weekly mentorship and activities.
  • GEM - Empowerment Inc. (8th grade girls): Empowers girls by fostering positive self-esteem, encouraging healthy relationships and inspiring personal success.
  • STEEL - Empowerment Inc. (7th or 8th grade boys): A character education program exclusively for 7th or 8th grade boys that helps students form positive attitudes, address real-world problems and encourage future planning.
  • Rites of Passage (7th grade boys): Supports a healthy transition from boyhood to manhood. Some goals include promoting positive identity, increasing grades and attendance, improving test scores and reducing oppositional behavior.
  • Why Try (7th Grade girls): This group supports and enhances the students’ personal growth and social skills and promotes educational success.
  • LatinX United (6th-8th grades): Provides orientation to 100% of the Spanish-speaking students so they are aware of essential school information regarding school culture, expectations, social-emotional connections and support networks available to them.   Antioch Middle STEAM students working on a classroom mat

With the foundation of community and care laid, Antioch Middle is ready to challenge students to greater levels of learning.

Antioch Middle offers a rigorous curriculum that includes Integrated Math I for high school credit, Spanish I for high school credit, Physical Science for high school credit, Honors Math, Honors English/Language Arts, Middle School Spanish, Chorus, Band, Coding, STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Math), Visual Art, Physical Education and the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective.

During WIN (What I Need) time, every student also receives reading or math support or enrichment daily, focused on areas of specific need. Students can extend their learning into leadership by participating in extracurricular activities such as Peer Court and House Council or the robust athletics program, which includes football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, volleyball, and track and field.

The Community, Care and Challenge concepts clearly demonstrate Antioch Middle School’s efforts to ensure Every Student is Known.

Fun fact about Antioch Middle: The school campus once housed Antioch High School and is home to the Antioch High School Alumni Association, which helps to provide students with extra food, clothing, school supplies and many other supports.

“We invite you to stop by and visit Antioch Middle School to come see Community, Care and Challenge firsthand,” says Dr. Bryan L. Seay, executive principal at Antioch Middle School. “Our students are kind, our families are supportive, and our incredible faculty and staff work hard every day to make AMS a great place to learn together.”
