Optional School Applications

Metro Nashville Public Schools uses a zoning system to assign students to the school that is nearest to their residence. You can verify which school falls within your zone by using our Zone Finder. However, if you would prefer to send your child to a school other than your zoned school, you can fill out an Optional Application to your preferred school during an annual application window each spring. Families who are new to MNPS can apply to schools with open space when they enroll.

Before you apply to a school, take the time to explore and visit schools you are interested in attending. Once you are ready to apply, you will need to go through our application process. This is how it works:

Application Process:

  • You can submit an Optional Application during the application window or to be placed on a waitlist if the window has closed but the new school year has not begun. Families new to MNPS may apply to schools with open seats when they enroll.

  • You can apply to a maximum of seven schools.

  • You will need to rank your choices in order of preference, 1 to 7.

  • Check seat availability at optional schools.

  • Check academic requirements for some optional schools.

  • Familiarize yourself with the online process by reviewing this Smart Choice tutorial or watching this quick video.
  • Check this site for the annual Optional Schools Calendar for important dates and deadlines.
