Here is one very important way: Metro Schools is in need of volunteers who can represent the educational interests of students with disabilities.
What is a Surrogate Parent?
- A surrogate parent is a volunteer appointed by a school to assist children who do not have parents or family members who can advocate for them.
- They have the same rights as a parent in making special education or early intervention decisions.
- They can review educational records; request and consent to evaluations; and challenge decisions through informal or formal procedures.
- This role is limited to the special education process and does not include other responsibilities for the child.
Requirements for Volunteering
- One day for free annual training
- Attend IEP meetings and parent-teacher conferences for assigned students
