Located on Broadway in the heart of downtown Nashville, Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School has ties to Nashville’s first ever public school. 
The then Hume High School opened in 1855, at the same location where it stands today, the corner of 8th Avenue and Broadway. Hume High was named after Professor Alfred Hume, who operated a private school at the time. He was charged with studying public school systems in the north in order to develop a public school system in Nashville. Hume was later appointed by then-mayor Hugh Smith to serve on a committee tasked with creating Nashville’s public schools.
Nashville’s second public school, Fogg High School, was quick to follow just two years later in 1875. The two schools were eventually combined in 1912 to become Hume-Fogg High School. This would become the first Tennessee school accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Today, Hume-Fogg Academic High School provides an exceptional quality school for academically advanced students across all subgroups. Nearly 900 students represent a wide array of ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds.
“Students come together at the central part of our city to learn and to grow,” said Kellie Hargis, the principal of Hume-Fogg.
Hume-Fogg’s advisory program, Knight Time, is one way the school ensures every student is known. Every student is partnered with an advisor who works with them throughout their four years. Students and advisors meet twice a week, and the advisor calls families monthly to stay in touch and offer support. Hume-Fogg also offers many different leadership and enrichment opportunities for students.
“Our leadership and enrichment opportunities help us better know our students – and help our students better know themselves,” Hargis said.
Known for its rigorous academics, Hume-Fogg has consistently ranked as one of the best public high schools in the state. In addition, they have been recognized as:
