Artificial Intelligence Use in Metro Nashville Public Schools

 

Metro Nashville Public Schools aims to enhance learning through smart adaptive technologies including Generative Artificial Intelligence, also known as GAI.

These principles ensure Generative AI integration supports the district's mission to improve instruction and assignments for students, teachers, and staff while safeguarding the rights of its community.

Guiding Principles

  • Teaching & Learning: GAI shall enhance educational outcomes by supporting both teaching and student learning through personalized and adaptive educational experiences.
  • Human-Centric Approach: GAI deployments shall prioritize human welfare and values, ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces human efforts in educational settings.
  • Privacy, Data Protection, and Security: Protecting personal and sensitive information is crucial, complying with applicable local, state, and federal laws to ensure student and staff data privacy and security.
  • Ethical & Responsible Use: GAI shall be used in a manner that is morally sound and responsible, avoiding harm and maximizing benefits while aligning with societal norms and expectations.
  • Equity and Inclusivity: GAI tools shall be accessible to all students regardless of their backgrounds and should not perpetuate or exacerbate existing inequalities.
  • Transparency: The district shall ensure that AI systems used by students and/or employees, as well as those embedded within vendor products, are understandable with clear explanations of how decisions are made, fostering trust and accountability.
  • Administrative Procedures: The Director of Schools will develop administrative procedures as necessary to implement this policy.

Community Notification

Per MNPS Policy 4.124: The Director of Schools shall provide notice to parents/guardians about the use of AI programs in the district. An approved list of AI programs will be provided through posting on the district’s website.

Approved Software by Role

Students
  • Canva – An image, document, and social media tool, Canva is available to students and staff, and it can use generative AI to create images and content.
Faculty and Staff
  • Microsoft Copilot – Utilizing the ChatGPT 4 model, Microsoft Copilot allows for staff to use many of the same features of ChatGPT but in a more private and secure environment that is FERPA compliant and does not add information to AI Training Models.
  • Canva – An image, document, and social media tool, Canva is available to students and staff and it can use generative AI to create images and content.
