Safety

Safety and Security

At Metro Nashville Public Schools, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priorities. We have implemented a comprehensive approach to ensure a secure learning environment, which includes the following measures:

Partnership with Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD)

School Resource Officers (SROs)
  • Experienced MNPD officers are assigned to middle and high schools to support administrators, foster positive relationships, and respond to potential threats. Elementary schools are also receiving increased police presence, with some transitioning to full-time SROs as staffing allows.
Emergency Operations Plans
  • In partnership with MNPD, each school develops site-specific emergency operations plans to effectively manage crises and identify areas for improvement.

MNPS Security Department

  • Responds to emergencies and supports schools
  • Maintains security cameras and emergency radio communication
  • Provides training for drills, safety programs, and security assessments
  • Operates K-9 unit for drug and weapon detection
  • Manages visitor and anonymous reporting systems (A-phone, Raptor, HelpMe, SafeTN app)
  • Implements audio enhancement with duress alarms

Advanced Security Technology

Security Cameras
  • Comprehensive camera systems are installed across campuses, providing real-time monitoring capabilities to school staff and SROs.
Omnilert Brandished Weapon Detection Systems
  • These systems alert authorities when a weapon is detected on camera, enhancing our proactive response to potential threats.
Evolv Weapons Detection Systems at MNPS High Schools
  • To enhance school safety, concealed weapons detection systems are being installed at all MNPS high schools. These AI-driven scanners allow for faster, non-intrusive entry while improving security.

Controlled Access Measures

Audio/Video Entry Systems
  • Visitors are required to identify themselves before gaining entrance to school buildings, ensuring controlled access.
Security Vestibules
  • Designated entry points limit access to the main building, adding an extra layer of security.
Shatter-Resistant Film
  • Installed on windows to prevent break-ins and protect occupants from potential hazards.

Proactive Safety Initiatives

Safety Ambassadors
  • Trained personnel in elementary schools address safety scenarios, including armed intruders and behavioral challenges, ensuring the well-being of our youngest students.
Campus Support
  • School-based staff in middle and high schools support with monitoring safety procedures and implementation of safety plans and protocols.
Regular Drills and Training
  • Staff and students participate in regular safety drills, including new incident command and bus safety drills, to ensure preparedness for various emergency situations.

Holistic Support Systems

Advocacy and Peace Centers
  • Established in elementary, middle, and high schools, these centers focus on de-escalation techniques and restorative practices to foster a positive school environment.
Threat Assessment Teams
  • School and district-level teams evaluate incidents or potential threats and develop student safety plans to prevent and minimize behavioral incidents.

Strong Communication Channels

Community Engagement
  • We encourage open communication between students, staff, and families. We encourage anyone that if you see something, say something to a trusted adult such as an MNPS staff member or law enforcement. This includes potential verbal or social media threats, as well as potential dangers on campus such as illegal drugs or weapons.

By implementing these comprehensive measures, MNPS is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
