MNPS International Baccalaureate Students Earn Diplomas

This year, 12 MNPS graduates have earned the full IB Diploma, with more than 100 additional students earning IB certificates. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme has been in Metro Nashville Public Schools for more than eight years.

Students who choose to participate in the IB Diploma Programme, which is offered at Hillsboro, Hillwood and Hunters Lane high schools, take rigorous courses over a two-year period, write international examinations in six subjects and complete requirements for three core components: the Theory of Knowledge course, Creative/Action/Service hours outside the classroom, and an Extended Essay of 4,000 words.

At Hunters Lane, which implemented the Diploma Programme in 2000, two students received IB Diplomas this year: Robert Hughes and Jessica Moore. Hughes will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and Moore will be a freshman at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Hunters Lane also offers the Middle Years Programme to students in ninth and tenth grades.

At Hillsboro, which gained authorization in 2004, eight students earned IB Diplomas. They are: Rhonda Bell, Berea College; Madeline Hinchion, Rhode Island School of Design; Michelle McCauley, University of Virginia; Eliana Ramage, Dartmouth University; Jacob Sachs, Rochester Institute of Technology; Rachel Stubbs, University of Washington, Seattle; Julie Trudel, Millsaps College; Mihret Woldesemaet, Duke University. The highest score earned was 40 by Rachel Stubbs, who set a school record. Hillsboro has recently completed Application A for the Middle Years Programme and will begin offering it this fall to ninth grade students.

The IB Diploma Programme was also authorized at Hillwood High School in 2004. Two Hillwood students earned IB Diplomas for their work during the 2007-09 school years; they are Diaundra Wiggins and Hala Zein-Sabatto. In the fall, Wiggns will attend Belmont University, and Zein- Sabatto will attend Vanderbilt University.

The International Baccalaureate Programme offers high-quality programs of international education to a worldwide community of schools. MNPS currently offers the Middle Years Programme at seven middle schools and the Diploma Programme at three high schools. The Middle Year Programmes is designed for students in grades 6-10 and provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills, achieved through embracing and transcending traditional school subjects. The Diploma Programme is a two-year curriculum for high school juniors and seniors, leading to final examinations and a qualification that is welcomed by leading universities around the world.
