The Metropolitan Board of Public Education consists of nine elected members, one member being elected from each of the nine school districts. The term of office is four years with the terms so staggered that no less than four members are elected every two years. In addition, two student advisor representatives from the Student Advisory Council serve with the Board.
The Board is engaged in Policy Governance which is a form of governing that requires the Board to set goals as it relates to End Results for students, create community linkages, engage in Board development, and hold the Director of Schools accountable for meeting its goals. The Board holds community linkages and Board development at its second meeting of the month (4th Tuesday of each month).
Regular meetings of the Board of Public Education are held at the Administration Building of Metropolitan Public Schools, 2601 Bransford Avenue, at 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. These meetings are open to the public and are televised on Metro 3, a local cable community access channel.
