MNPS Unveils New Website, Name for Exceptional Education Services

After months of design and the gathering of teacher, community and parental input, Metro Nashville Public Schools is excited to announce the unveiling of a new website for families of students with special needs. The Exceptional Education Services can be found by visiting www.mnps.org, clicking on Teaching and Learning, and then Exceptional Education.

“We have worked very hard to make sure we provide a thorough and easy to navigate online tool for our parents,” said Dr. Linda DePriest, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Support. “The design of this site has been a long process, but we wanted to make sure and give our students, parents, and community members a tool they could use.”

Key features of the site include:

  • Where to Start -- a step by step guide to acquiring special educational services from the initial referral process to implementing the individualized education plan for each child
  • Parent Resources -- a comprehensive list of online resources and tools for parents of children with special needs
  • Services -- a breakdown of services offered by the district for students ages 3 - 21
  • Disabilities -- a comprehensive listing of all disabilities, their definitions, and signs and symptoms served by the district
Also with the announcement of the new site comes a new name to the department. Previously referred to as the Department of Special Education, the department which also oversees gifted and talented educational services has adopted the title Department of Exceptional Education.
