In late 2007, the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Public Education voted to start a task force on student assignment. Each board member was allowed to appoint one person to serve on the task force, as was the former Director of Schools. After six months of study and discussion, the task force created a New Student Assignment Plan.
The task force unanimously voted for the new plan. Key components of the plan include more efficient utilization of existing building space, supporting of neighborhood schools, and providing additional choice to MNPS students and families. The plan, adopted by the Metro School Board in July 2008, is scheduled to take effect for the 2009-2010 school year and includes the reassignment of thousands of students to new schools.
