The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Food Service Department provides breakfast daily in all schools. Eating breakfast regularly benefits both the child and the school. Children who eat breakfast are more alert and less tired during the day and have a better chance to do well in school. Breakfast makes the difference in the way children look, the way they feel, and the way they grow and learn. There are fewer discipline problems among children who start their day with a good breakfast. Children seldom make up at other meals foods they miss at breakfast.
Breakfast is the key to good nutrition. The calories and iron provided by the school breakfast program fills one-third of a child's daily needs for these important nutrients. No one food contains all the nutrients which young bodies need. However, the components of the breakfast program used together supply many of the nutrients necessary for the development of children.
The school breakfast pattern is as follows:
Breakfast Menu Pattern Fruit or Vegetable -1/2 cup Milk - 8 fluid ounces Two servings of Bread/Grains (or) One Serving of Bread/Grains (and) One ounce of Meat
Eating breakfast at school is a smart choice meal deal. When children are eligible for a free or reduced-priced breakfast, they are also entitled to a free or reduced-priced lunch.
